Relational database management systems (RDBMSs) are systems of software that manage databases as structured sets of tables containing rows and columns with references to one another through key values. They include the ability to optimize storage, process transactions, perform queries, and preserve the integrity of data structures. When used with applications, they provide the beating heart of the collection of business functions supported by those applications. They vary considerably in terms of the factors that impact the total cost of running a database application, yet users seldom perform a disciplined procedure to calculate such costs. Most users choose instead to remain with a single vendor's RDBMS and never visit the question of ongoing hardware, software, and staffing fees.

The results of this survey are unequivocal: while there are a few metrics in which Oracle rates more highly than Sybase, the vast majority of cases prove that ASE offers better TCO than Oracle. Moreover, the margin of difference is not small, as many of the metrics indicate that Sybase is less expensive or requires fewer resources than Oracle by more than 20% and, in some cases, more than 30%. As a result we would expect a clear TCO benefit for deploying Sybase ASE as opposed to Oracle.

Enterprises can take a first step toward moving to the private cloud for their mission-critical workloads with a converged infrastructure as the foundation. Most enterprises are following this common path that allows them to pool and share resources for their most mission critical applications. With that in place, virtualization can be added to enable that infrastructure to be used most efficiently while still meeting business service levels. HP CloudSystem is the best solution to bring your legacy system forward and enable an agile set of service delivery capabilities across all IT domains.

This paper explores the design principles behind the HP PREMA Architecture. It discusses how HP implemented the HP PREMA Architecture in the HP ProLiant DL980 server, with innovations such as a special node controller to improve system bandwidth inside the chassis and system performance to speed the processing of software running in the Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Solaris operating environments

This IDC white paper provides a summary of top evaluation considerations for enterprise computing — including the top characteristics for mission-critical computing platforms — all of which impact acquisition costs and operations costs. IDC research has shown that the top concerns of datacenter managers include availability, security, use of datacenter floor space, and power/cooling. Today, all of these considerations must be addressed by scalable systems. These high-end servers must be efficient — and cost-effective — in order to be acquired and maintained over time.

This IDC white paper describes the difficulties enterprises routinely encounter when supporting complex technology throughout the IT environment. It also highlights what enterprises should consider when evaluating support services providers and how specific support services can help minimize downtime and improve overall IT service delivery. The paper examines support services offerings from HP and also outlines the challenges and opportunities facing HP in this dynamic market.

Should commercial Unix systems be placed on the midmarket data center endangered species list? In this report, we look at data from our 2010-11 Unix Vendor Preference Survey to see how medium and small-sized organizations view commercial Unix systems. We found that large majorities of these customers see Unix as a strategic platform and a host for their most important workloads. They also shared their decision criteria for Unix-based systems and their thoughts on commercial Unix vs. alternatives.

After completing our 2010-11 Unix Vendor Preference Survey, we were asked how commercial Unix was faring in the midmarket segment (defined as less than 4,000 employees). We cut the data by customer size and found that commercial Unix is held in high regard by the midmarket. We documented those findings in our “Is Commercial Unix Relevant in the Midmarket?” research report. In this report, we take this analysis a step further and examine results from the ‘Vendor Face-Off’ section of the survey, focusing on key midmarket results for Hewlett-Packard’s Integrity system line and the HP-UX operating system…

This white paper presents a technical comparison of HP-UX 11i v3, AIX 6.1, and Solaris 10 UNIX operating systems, focusing on their functional capabilities in terms of virtualization, reliability, and security. In each of these areas, the paper identifies some critical technical requirements, describes the significance of these requirements in current customer environments, and then shows how well HP-UX 11i v3 meets these requirements compared to the other UNIX systems.

The effort to make IT “more manageable” has been going on for decades. The tools, techniques, and strategies introduced over the years have helped us scale from when we could count our computers on our fingers to today, where we count them by the thousands, if not hundred-thousands. But it’s a constant race. As IT’s economic and social importance ratchets up every year, so do the scale points and service levels required. We have to keep upping the bar.

Everyone wants to move their IT toward a more flexible, efficient future state. This has driven recent years’ datacenter modernization projects. Organizations are modularizing with blade servers, consolidating workloads onto virtualized environments, moving to scale-out storage, and adopting service-oriented management and deliverly strategies—all part of forward-looking IT convergence and evolution.
